Civilian Authenticity

Guidelines

As Civil War re-enactors, one of our goals is to portray the 1860's time period as accurately as possible.  Research is done using historical records including photographs, newspaper articles, books, letters, and original clothing garments that are still in existence.  This research takes several years and is done by members of the unit, and other members of the community.  This page displays some of the guidelines that we recommend to our unit members who portray civilians from the late 1850's through 1860's.  These guidelines assist in making our impressions more accurate for the portrayal of a civilian from the *Erie County area during the Civil War.

*Note: Clothing styles, fabrics, and impressions varied from place to place in the United States during the Civil War.  These variances depended on many things including social status, wealth, geographic location, & customs, to name a few.  Keep in mind that if an individual's attire is different than another's, it is not necessarily inaccurate.
